About
Hi, I'm
William Montiel
Senior Software Engineer
I'm a Software Engineer based in Cali, Colombia, with over a decade of experience building software that works in real time and at scale. Most of my career has been spent in logistics, fleet management, and GPS telemetry—environments where a delayed update or a dropped signal isn't just a bug in a backlog; it's a real-world problem.
What I do best is take end-to-end ownership of complex architectures. Whether designing cloud infrastructure or shipping a React Native app, my goal is always to strip away unnecessary complexity to bridge a robust backend with an interface that feels effortless.
Off the clock
I build high-end custom gaming PCs and play into the small hours — consoles included. On match days you'll find me cheering for Arsenal FC and my hometown club, América de Cali. And when it comes to films, horror is my genre.
My story
I was born in Palmira, a small city near Cali, in the '90s. Video games and technology hooked me early, and by the time I grew up I knew I wanted to build things with computers for a living. I started studying in Cali and eventually moved there — but without the money to pay for school, I worked by day and took classes at night. Anyone who's done it knows how hard that road is. I graduated in software technology and landed my first job in 2013, writing PHP, Ember.js, and MySQL. That job taught me an enormous amount — it's the foundation of who I am as an engineer. A few years later I took the leap and went back to school for a Systems Engineering degree, which I finished in 2019; I've been a systems engineer ever since, and everything I've built has grown from there.
I've had to fight for everything I have, and I'm proud of who that fight made me. I grew up without my father — he was murdered — but my mother and three sisters were more than enough.
These days, home is a full house: my dog Tommy and two cats — Michi, the white one, and Chimuela, the black one. I've been married since 2018 to a wonderful woman, and together we love to travel and chase new food and flavors. Work has flown me to Vietnam twice — from Hanoi to Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City — and I made the most of it, adding South Korea and Singapore to the map. I like being in control, but I enjoy trying new things and learning new technology just as much.
Keep it simple.
It's more than a design principle; it's my philosophy, both in code and in life.
